In this stimulating series of works, Said (2023), the artist presents a powerful commentary on the performative nature of femininity and the liberation from societal expectations. The small portraits, with the vacancy of their mouths, are all captured in various intimate and vulnerable moments of “pleasure”, and many on the brink of sexual orgasm in pornography. Some may argue the recurring imagery of the female's open mouth leans close to 'soft porn' a perception that is partially a result of the male fantasy that is imprinted in today's gender norm. Yet, the artist challenges the notion of performative gender roles by making their mouths empty.
The act of needle felting also subverts established norms of artistic self-expression. The craft itself, while painful and dangerous at times, contains a level of uncertainty. Instead of showing the normal front side of the needle felted surface, the artist chose to display the reserved side of the felted surface to the audience. Therefore, what comes across in the front may go against the artist's plan. Therefore, the beauty of needle felting in this way is about being comfortable with unpredictable outcomes and finding the balance between expression and perception.
This project invites the audience to question and reflect upon the societal pressures that shape and restrict our understanding of sexuality and intimacy. It encourages a deeper exploration of personal desires and a rejection of performative expectations, and pores on the difference between self-expression and perception.
